ISBN and banderoleHow does your book reach the shelf?

In short: An ISBN is your book’s international identifying number; in Turkey the ISBN Agency of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism issues it free of charge. A banderole is the security label that shows a book was printed legally, stuck on every copy sold. At Kitapdoku we get both: your book is published under our imprint, with its ISBN and barcode.

Example

A valid ISBN. Issued in Turkey.

Proofs

In the back room of a print shop lie the proofs of books printed years ago. Nazlı Hanım reads each one; her apprentice wonders which of them will be printed next, and when.

ISBN, banderole, barcode: what does each one do?

They are often mentioned together, but each comes from a different place and sits somewhere different on the book.

ISBN
International Standard Book Number. Thirteen digits that tell this edition of the book apart from every other book in the world. In Turkey the ISBN Agency of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism issues it free of charge.
Banderole
A security label issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showing that a book was copied legally. It goes on every copy after printing and before distribution; it is how a pirated book is told apart.
Barcode
The ISBN as stripes on the back cover. A bookshop’s till and a warehouse scanner recognise the book by it. It is not obtained separately; it is made from the ISBN.
Imprint page
The book’s identity page: author, publisher, ISBN, year of printing and printer. It usually sits on the back of the title page.
Legal deposit
Handing a set number of copies of a published book to the state libraries, as the law requires. This is how every book enters the national archive.

How is the last digit of an ISBN worked out?

The last digit is a check digit calculated from the other twelve. It catches a mistyped number; the checker above runs exactly this sum.

  1. Multiply the first twelve digits by 1 and 3 in turn.
  2. Add up the products.
  3. The number that brings the total up to the next multiple of ten is the check digit. If the total is already a multiple of ten, the check digit is 0.

The products add up to 71. The next multiple of ten is 80; the difference, 9, is the check digit.

When does a book need a new ISBN?

An ISBN belongs not to the text but to the edition the reader holds. In short: if the content or the format changes, the book needs a new number.

New ISBN needed

  • An e-book. It is a different format from the printed book.
  • Hardback and paperback editions. Each gets its own number.
  • A new edition with changed content: additions, cuts or a corrected text.
  • An edition with a different trim size, paper or page count.
  • A translation. Each language gets its own ISBN.
  • A work in several volumes. Each volume gets its own ISBN, and the set as a whole another.

Same ISBN stays

  • A reprint with nothing changed.
  • A change of price.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ISBN cost anything?

No. In Turkey the ISBN Agency of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism issues ISBNs free of charge. Kitapdoku’s ISBN and banderole package covers the legal registration and banderole procedures; it costs ₺2,200.00, excluding VAT.

Is an ISBN required?

Not by law. But a book without an ISBN cannot get into bookshops, online stores or library catalogues. If you plan to sell your book, you need one.

What is a banderole, and does every book need one?

A banderole is a security label issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showing that a book was copied legally. It goes on the books after printing and before distribution. Banderoles are applied for to match the print run; every copy carries its own.

What is the smallest run with an ISBN?

Our ISBN and banderole package can be chosen for runs of 52 copies or more. For a smaller run we print your book without an ISBN; the minimum applies only to this package.

How long does getting an ISBN take?

For a complete application the ISBN Agency usually assigns a number the same working day. The ISBN and banderole package adds 3 working days to printing.

Does an e-book need its own ISBN?

Yes. The printed book and the e-book are separate formats and each gets its own ISBN. The hardback and paperback editions of the same book also get separate ISBNs.

Can I get the ISBN myself?

Yes. Log in to the Publication Standards and Legal Deposit System on ekygm.gov.tr with your e-Devlet password, register as an author-publisher and fill in the ISBN application form. To apply as a publishing house you first need a publisher’s certificate from the Directorate General of Copyright. Once you have your number, you can download its barcode on this page.

Who is the publisher of an ISBN obtained with the package?

Kitapdoku is; our imprint appears on the book’s imprint page and in the ISBN record. An ISBN is an identifying number and creates no copyright.
