Book typesetting and layoutHow many pages will your file make?

In short: Typesetting arranges your text for a book at the level of letters, lines and paragraphs; layout places that text on the page. We take your Word file and return a print-ready PDF at the trim size you choose. The same text runs to a different number of pages at each size and type size, and that number sets the print price.

Word shows it at the bottom left of the window. The example is a novel of average length.

Same text, two pages

The left page is the text as it comes out of Word; the right page is the same text typeset. Pick a flaw to mark it on both pages.

closed the door quietly behind him.

In the back room of the print shop lay the proofs of books printed years ago. Mrs Nazlı opened them one by one and read the notes in the margins. On some pages a single letter had been marked in pencil; on others a whole paragraph was struck through.

"When will this book be printed?" the apprentice asked -- his voice almost lost in the hum of the presses.

Mrs Nazlı smiled. "When every line has settled into place," she said, "not a day earlier, not a day later."

THE PROOFS

Mrs Nazlı smiled. “When every line has settled into place,” she said, “not a day earlier, not a day later.”

The apprentice had nothing to say; he gathered the proofs, head bowed, and closed the door quietly behind him.

In Word

Justified text set without hyphenation opens up between words; the gaps line up and run down the page in white rivers.

Typeset

Lines break at proper syllables and the spaces even out. The page reads as an even grey texture.

Typesetting or layout?

The two words are often used as one, but they are different jobs. They are done together in practice, so we offer them as one service.

Typesetting
Concerns the text itself: typeface and size, line spacing, hyphenation, quotes and dashes, widows and orphans. The reader’s eye moves along the line without catching.
Layout
Concerns the page: trim size, margins, gutter, chapter openings, running heads and page numbers, where images go. Every page of the book comes from the same grid.

The Turkish word for typesetting, “dizgi”, comes from the days of lead type, when a compositor took letters from the case one by one and set them line by line in a composing stick. Six rules of good Turkish typesetting

Readers notice none of these; what they notice is the page that breaks them.

  • Hyphenation follows Turkish syllables

A word that does not fit at the end of a line breaks at a syllable: “ki-tap”, “bas-kı”. No single letter is left alone at the start or end of a line.

  • Quotes and apostrophes are curly

Opening and closing quotes (“ ”) replace the straight quote ("), and a curly apostrophe (’) follows proper names.

  • Hyphen, en dash and em dash are kept apart

The hyphen (-) is for word breaks and compounds. The en dash (–) marks a range: 1923–1938. The em dash (—) sets off dialogue and asides.

  • No widows or orphans

A paragraph’s last line never falls alone at the top of a page, nor its first line alone at the bottom.

  • Word spaces look even

In justified text, spacing is balanced with hyphenation and letter spacing, so gaps do not stack into white rivers.

  • Lines back up front to back

Every page sits on the same line grid, so on thin paper the text on the back does not show between the lines.

How it works

  1. You send your file

Tick typesetting and layout in the calculator and attach your Word file to the order. You pay once your file has been checked.

  2. We typeset your book

We set the text at the trim and type size you chose and lay it out on the page. The exact page count is settled here.

  3. We send you the PDF to approve

You receive a PDF of the typeset book. Nothing goes to press without your approval.

  4. Your book is printed

The file you approved goes to press. Typesetting adds 5 working days to production.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between typesetting and layout?

Typesetting arranges the text itself: typeface, size, line spacing, hyphenation, quotes and dashes. Layout builds the page: trim size, margins, gutter, chapter openings and page numbers. At Kitapdoku both are done together as one service.

How is typesetting priced?

By the book’s page count: ₺5.00 per page, excluding VAT. Typesetting a 328-page book, for example, comes to ₺1,640.00.

How many pages will my book have?

It depends on the length of the text, the trim size and the type size. A novel of 60,000 words runs to about 328 pages at 13,5 × 19,5 cm (Roman) in 11 pt. Drop your own file into the estimate on this page and it will be counted from your file.

Does typesetting add to the production time?

Yes, it adds 5 working days.

Can I typeset the book myself?

Yes. You can upload your own print-ready PDF. In the calculator you can download Word and PDF templates made for the trim size and binding you choose, and start from those. We still check your file for print readiness and page count before you pay.

Which files can I send?

PDF, DOCX, DOC for the interior and PDF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, TIF, TIFF for the cover. If we are typesetting your book, your Word file is all we need.
